Historically the region has been famous for its textile artistry; however, by the 1970s many of the traditional artisans were forced to work in sweatshops for meager wages. Then, in the 1980s, a group of women joined together to form a cooperative association to compete with the region's textile sweatshops, and today more than 600 women make a living working for themselves producing these wonderful crocheted products.
